The first microwave ablation of a pancreatic tumor was performed at Sechenov University


At Sechenov University held surgery to “evaporate” a pancreatic tumor. This is the first such operation in Russia.

Surgeons from Sechenov University performed microwave ablation (MWA) of a pancreatic tumor with preliminary stenting of the bile and pancreatic ducts. According to the press service of the medical university, the operation was performed on a 63-year-old patient with a neuroendocrine insulin-producing tumor of the pancreas, which was accompanied by hypoglycemic disease syndrome.

Traditional surgical intervention in such cases is accompanied by a high percentage of postoperative complications (60–70%) and a mortality rate of more than 5%. Alternative methods involve using local destruction: introducing electrodes into the tumor, which heat the tumor to a high temperature and burn it, as well as freezing or introducing ethanol. Unlike radiofrequency ablation, MVA allows you to create the highest temperature in the lesion without damaging adjacent structures.

The uniqueness of the operation performed at Sechenov University lies in the fact that before MVA, stenting of the bile and pancreatic ducts, to which the adjacent tumor. This made it possible to avoid their damage during the “evaporation” of insulinoma,” the university explained.

Surgeons at Sechenov University performed six tumor ablation operations from 2014 to 2017. Postoperative complications were no more than 20% and did not require repeated surgical interventions. In the long-term period (more than 6 years), relapse of the disease was not observed in any patient.

Previously, doctors at Sechenov University also used argon plasma for the first time to remove hemorrhoids. The technique combines all gentle methods of treating pathology.
