The majority of medical university students were in favor of increasing the volume of practical training

The vast majority of students of specialized universities and graduates of different years (74%) support an increase in the hours of practical training in the training program, including with the involvement of experienced mentors and supervisors. Of these, 39% proposed expanding the scope of practice, 27% – increasing the hours of practice in the hospital, 8% – in the outpatient department.

A cross-section of student opinions is presented in the study “Analysis of the opinions of students and graduates on the implementation of specialty programs in medical universities”, its results are published on the website of the Higher School of Health Organization and Management (HSOUZ). Almost half of the respondents (45%) believe that lecture material should occupy 25-49% of the total volume of the program. Another 17% believe that lectures should take up 50-74% of the time, the remaining 38% responded that lectures should make up less than 25% of the learning time.

Over a third of those surveyed (227 respondents) were in favor of redistributing disciplines in the first three years of study, mainly in favor of reducing the subjects of the social, humanitarian and general education block. In this context, philosophy (147 mentions), sociology (127), chemistry and biology (115) were most often mentioned.

At the same time, there is a need to change approaches to teaching fundamental disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, and pathological anatomy. Respondents believe that some specific questions of this block should be transferred to more senior courses and studied to a greater extent within the framework of clinical disciplines. According to graduates, this will “relieve the burden on junior courses for a more detailed study of the basic processes of the body’s vital functions” and “make it easier for senior students to understand the complex mechanisms of diseases.”

The vast majority of respondents (84.8%) also supported the introduction of a separate discipline into the educational program aimed at developing communication skills, including classes on developing soft skills (ethics, positioning a doctor, developing a personal brand), the fundamentals of scientific and entrepreneurial activity.

The survey was conducted using an anonymous questionnaire during the period from October 1 to December 1, 2022 among students enrolled in specialty programs and graduates of various medical universities. The total sample is 660 respondents. Of these, 417 are students, 160 are medical specialists, 83 are other categories of graduates (teachers, graduate students, etc.). Distribution of graduates and students by specialty: “General Medicine” (84.2%), “Medical and Preventive Care” (7.7%), “Pediatrics” (5.6%), “Dentistry” (1.8%) , “Medical cybernetics” (0.5%), “Medical biochemistry” (0.2%). The questionnaire contained questions about the components and distribution of hours of the educational program, the desired amount of practical training and lecture course, the format of practical classes and lectures, as well as the need to develop soft skills, such as communication competence.

Students and graduates were also asked to evaluate their readiness for independent practical activities after studying at a specialty on a 10-point scale. Graduates of 1980–2000 rated their readiness on average by 6.88 points, graduates of 2001–2010 by 5.96 points, and graduates of 2011–2022 by 5.35 points.
