For the first time, the Blokhin Oncology Center used reconstructive technology with the installation of two individual endoprostheses

Surgeons of the National Medical Research Center of Oncology named after. N.N. Blokhin was the first to undergo resection of the pelvic bones and proximal femur with replacement of the defect with two individual endoprostheses. The patient, who had half of the bones of the pelvic ring and part of the femur affected by the tumor removed, retained the ability to move and live a full life.

The multi-hour and complex operation consisted of several stages. A lot of preparatory work took place in the preoperative period. Surgeons and bioengineers, guided by the results of CT or MRI, assessed the extent of the lesion and anatomical features, determined the boundaries of resection, developed individual implants with the same individual set of instruments and parts for fixation, and carefully thought through each stage of the operation, the press service of the National Medical Research Center reports.

During the operation, the bones and tissues affected by the tumor were first radically removed, then a platform was formed for the installation of endoprostheses and holes were made in the pelvic bones for their reliable fixation. After endoprosthetics of the pelvic bones, surgeons began endoprosthetics of the proximal femur. The culminating stage is the assembly of the hip joint assembly, consisting of two oncological prostheses. At the same time, the length of the limb and the amplitude of movements in the replaced joint are controlled, then the cavity formed after tissue removal is eliminated – plastic surgery of the soft tissue defect is performed in compliance with muscle architectonics.
