The Almazov Center has mastered allogeneic bone marrow transplantation using total body irradiation in conditioning mode


At the National Medical Research Center named after. V.A. Almazov successfully performed allogeneic bone marrow transplantation using total body irradiation in conditioning mode for two minor patients. Both patients remain in remission of the underlying disease.

Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is a widely used treatment for relapsed and refractory forms of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children and adults. The first stage of the process is conditioning – intensive antitumor therapy using high doses of chemotherapy, in some cases in combination with radiation therapy, which the patient receives for one week before the transplant procedure. Conditioning is carried out with the aim of maximizing the destruction of tumor cells and suppressing the patient’s immunity to prevent rejection. Conducted international studies have proven the advantage of using total body irradiation as the most optimal conditioning regimen when performing bone marrow transplantation in children with relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is one of the most common oncohematological diseases in children, and thanks to optimization of therapy, the overall survival rate today reaches 85–90%. However, about 15–20% of all cases (ALL) are relapses of the disease and forms that are refractory to standard treatment. Such patients are indicated for bone marrow transplantation. If it is performed in a timely manner, the probability of achieving repeated remission of the disease is 40–70%.

Carrying out such a complex operation in St. Petersburg became possible thanks to the close interdisciplinary cooperation of specialists from the National Medical Research Center named after. V.A. Almazov and the Treatment and Diagnostic Center of the International Institute of Biological Systems named after. Berezin Sergei (LDC MIBS), reports the press service of the National Medical Research Center.

“The possibility of using such a high-tech method of therapy in children, which meets international recommendations, and the results obtained allow specialists to continue working in this direction and achieve better results when performing bone marrow transplants,” the report notes.
